MUSIC VIDEO LANGUAGE

PREP Watch our two music videos again and find ONE example of the difference between the MEDIA LANGUAGE of the two videos:

  • ·         mise-en-scene
  • ·         camerawork
  • ·         editing
  • ·         narrative

In Teenage Dirtbag the mise-en-scene is set in your typical American high school full of popular girls and sporty people. There is also very strong stereotypes in mis-en-scene. However, sk8ter boy is not the same. Firstly it is set in Los Angeles in alleyways and abandoned buildings. It has a very rugged and rebellious feel to it. This may be because we see a gang of teenagers cause havoc all around LA compared to the stereotypical setting of the high school.

The camerawork in Teenage Dirtbag is different compared to Sk8er Boi as Teenage Dirtbag has a lot of still camerawork and never breaking the 4th wall. This is because of the story line being very gentle meaning there is no need for moving shots. Once again Sk8er Boi is not the same. It is constantly moving using handheld and tracking shots this is because the music video contains lots of movement such as the group of people doing different jumps and flips as they run through alleyways and down stairs. They use this camera work to make the viewer feel like they are there, alongside the group running with them rather then just watching them.

The editing in Teenage Dirtbag is slow paced and relaxed with occasional cuts between the storyline and Wheatus the band. The scenes also switch to slow-motion when the main character sees Noel (his crush) from this it indicates to the reader that this is possibly a dream the boy is having or he likes her so much that she seems like she is always in slow-motion to him. In Sk8er Boi, the editing is completely different as it is extremely fast-paced. It is also used to fit the story line so we feel like it is very chaotic with lots of things going on as it also is cut to the beat very heavily and it seems like every beat there is a new shot.

In Teenage Dirtbag, the main character is shown as a lonely, unpopular, nerdy boy and referred to as the ‘loser’ in the music video. In the story he wishes his crush would just notice him for once.  As he believes that  he can treat her better than her boyfriend and of course it turns out to all be a dream. However, in Sk8er Boi Avril Lavigne is a rebellious, careless teenager who only cares about having fun in life and doing whatever she wants. She finds excitement through breaking rules and trying to stand out but in Teenage Dirtbag, all he wants to do it fit in and be accepted by the popular people and Noel.

MISE EN SCENE Identify the 'strong stereotypes in mise-en-scene'. Detail earns marks.
CAMERAWORK Good answer. By 'very gentle' do you mean slow-paced? 'moving shots' Do you mean hand-held?
